Sacajawea Junior High School
401 E. 33rd Avenue

Construction for the new Sacajawea Junior High School began in February 1959 and was completed in 1960. On the 1st day of school in September 1960 there were 1,131 seventh, eighth and ninth graders enrolled. This relieved the “Baby Boomer Generation” enrollment pressures on the surrounding grade schools that sent “their older students” to Sacajawea. It also put over 1,100 preteen and early teenage students in one very large new school with no history or traditions, and no upper class leadership. It makes you ask the question, “What were they thinking?” For those of us who were Sacajawea students during these years, it was a loud and crazy time.

For the brief time students attended Sacajawea, we met and made friends with students from many grade schools. Upon graduation from Sacajawea, these same students would go on to either Ferris or Lewis & Clark high school.
